Exploring the Collections

This guide describes the various ways the DC History Center collections are organized, and the methods the public can use to access them.

Manuscript Collections by MS Number

This page will soon list all processed manuscript collections by the repository-assigned MS number. The links connect to the online catalog record for the collection. While not every collection warrants a finding aid (a catalog record can often be sufficient), finding aids, where available, can be accessed via links at the bottom of relevant catalog records.

While these are cataloged as manuscript collections, that generally indicates that paper-based documents (such as correspondence, personal papers, and organizational and business records) are the bulk of the material - but not necessarily the only material - in the collection. Manuscript collections often include photographs, maps, publications, and the occasional object! Some manuscript collections include so many images that they may have a companion photograph collection. In this case, the collection name would remain the same, and an additional identifier would be added to the catalog record for a cross-reference.

Collections are listed below in numerical order; if an MS number is noted as "retired," that indicates that the number was either skipped or was once assigned to a collection that has since been given another number or moved to the to-be-processed queue.

Tip: While the catalog is the most robust way to search for collections relevant to your research, you can use the Select All (Control/Command A) then the Find function (Control/Command F) to search the page for a specific name or company to see if the DC History Center holds a related named manuscript collection.
