ERAU Libraries Book Club

The book club selections for Spring semester 2021 were selected by the members of the club:

February 2, 12-1 p.m. (ET): The Word for World is Forest by Ursula K. Le Guin - online through Zoom.

Pitch:
Colonialism is exported to the stars in this classic environmentalist SF novel about humans landing on a forest planet inhabited by peaceful, intelligent green-furred sub-humans. Earth desperately needs trees, so deforestation starts, and the inhabitants are subdued and enslaved. Interstellar capitalism, racism, environmentalism, and oppression are some of the themes in Le Guin’s masterful story.

March 2, 12-1 p.m. (ET): The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah - online through Zoom.

Pitch:
This is an epic panorama of World War II and it illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France.

April 6, 12-1 p.m. (ET): Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam - online through Zoom.

Pitch:
This suspenseful and provocative novel is keenly attuned to the complexities of parenthood, race, and class. Leave the World Behind explores how our closest bonds are reshaped—and unexpected new ones are forged—in moments of crisis. The novel was a finalist for last year's National Book Award.
