Considered the “matriarch of Honduran poetry”, Clementina Suárez was the first woman to publish a book of poems in this Central American country and became an important cultural promoter and champion for women's rights. She began writing poetry under the influence of Spanish America modernista influence, but quickly moved to a personal style that delved into the experience of womanhood and the political struggles in her country. Suarez's poem "Lamento en el espacio" belongs to her book De la desilusión a la esperanza published in 1944. Her complete works were published in 2013.
Aguas desbarrancadas cortan narcisos y nieblas,
mientras yo atajo lamentos
de madres y de niños.
