Lucila de María Godoy Alcayaga was born to a humble family in the city of Vicuña in Chile on April 7th, 1889. Her love for education started early on in her life and took her to be a teacher in different primary schools in Chile. Her poetic growth developed steadily while her poems were broadcast by local news media in Chile. In 1922, poet and Minister of Education, José Vasconcelos, invited Mistral to collaborate in the creation of public libraries and an education reform for Mexico. In this same year, she published Desolación. The poem "Piececitos" reflects the maternal instincts of the poet and her profound understanding of social injustice affecting the most vulnerable. Mistral was the first Latin American person to receive the Nobel Prize in literature in 1945.

azulosos de frío,
