Esri Story Maps & ArcGIS Online are web-based applications geospatial and non-geospatial analysis and storytelling. This tutorial covers the definition of GIS, data finding using NYU’s Spatial Data Repository (SDR), visualizing spatial data in a thematic web map and exporting that map into a multimedia presentation including images, videos, text, and web pages.
Software:

Story Maps, ArcGIS Online.  Please note that for all ArcGIS-related tutorials (Introduction to ArcGIS-Pro and Introduction to StoryMaps), an ESRI account is required independent of whether the tutorial is remote or in-person. Please request an ESRI account through Data Services upon registering for an ArcGIS-related tutorial.

Some tutorials are held remotely and require NYU sign on to access, while others are held in person, without a remote component. Please note the correct modality and location of the tutorial when registering

Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of GIS is required to attend. However, you are encouraged to request an NYU ArcGIS Organizational account prior to the tutorial.

  • Define GIS and its uses.
  • Explore the Story Maps and ArcGIS Online interfaces.
  • Explore the NYU SDR and learn about spatial data.
  • Create a multimedia presentation including: an interactive GIS map using spatial data from NYU’s SDR, images, videos, webpages, and text
  • Share Story Maps.
