OpenAthens: Creating an Account

Create a MyAthens Account

  To create an OpenAthens account, you must:

  • Be affiliated with Hospital Sisters Health System.

    Supply a valid number: HSHS employee ID, student ID,  National Provider Identifier (NPI), or 4-digit dictation number.

    Provide a valid email address to receive your activation email.

    Register onsite using an HSHS network computer OR offsite using an HSHS affiliated email address (hshs.org, sjcs.edu, springfieldclinic.com, prevea.com, familyhealthassociates.net, prairieresearch.com, prairieheart.com).

  1.   To get started, register here: https://register.openathens.net/hshs.org/register

         You must use an HSHS affiliated email address (hshs.org, sjcs.edu, springfieldclinic.com, siumed.edu, prevea.com, familyhealthassociates.net, prairieresearch.com, prairieheart.com)  to receive your activation email.

        Physicians who are on staff at St. John's Hospital should register as affiliated with St. John's (instead of HSHS System) in order to have access to all of St. John's electronic resources. (See below.)

         St. John's College of Nursing students must use their College email address (sjcs.edu) to get full access to electronic resources. This is especially true for distance education students who are also HSHS employees.

  2.    You will receive an activation email from noreply@openathens.net.

          a. Click on the activation link to create a password to complete your OpenAthens account setup.

          b. Passwords are case-sensitive. They must have a minimum length of 10 characters, must not include your username, and must meet a minimum complexity score assessed by an industry-standard password strength checker tool.

  3.    Login with your OpenAthens username and password here to access library resources.
