Education: Websites

Education Resources on the Web

Evaluating Websites

When using the web for your research, you want to evaluate whether or not the site contains reliable information. Use your better judgment, but don't just cite the first website you find. Here are a few questions you may want to ask yourself before using the information:

  • When was the site last updated? Is the information current enough for your topic?
  • Is the information based on fact or opinion? Are sources cited? Is it in line with other information you've read about your topic?
  • Who is the author? What are their credentials? Is it a .com, .edu, or .gov site? What does the URL tell you?
  • What is the website aiming to do (inform? persuade? sell a product?)? Who is the intended audience?
