Short Stories & Film Adaptations

1. Global Awareness: Students examine actions and relationships that influence global systems from multiple perspectives, analyzing how complex systems impact self and others. 

• Reflect upon interactions and interrelationships between our own experiences and natural and human systems in a global context.

2. Global Diversity: Students explore  complex dimensions of diversity, equity, and inclusion around the world, including language, culture, and identity. 

• Engage with differing perspectives and experiences while maintaining a sense of culture perspective, including how culture informs our own beliefs and ways of thinking. 
• Expand our ability to cross boundaries associated with language, culture, histories, and status in order to bridge differences, recognize similarities, and collaboratively and equitably reach common goals. 

International Studies Rationale

This course focuses on a critical and analytical reading of short fictional texts and their film adaptations. The primary focus of this class will be to gain a deeper understanding of literary works, American and international, old and new, while also looking at movies that were based on those works and how they convey the artistic values of their culture. By the end of the semester, students should have a clear view of how short fiction can be just as effective as longer fiction and should be able to analyze it from a critical perspective. Students will also examine movie adaptations from a cultural standpoint and evaluate the movies for their effectiveness. By participating in dialog with their peers, students should also be able to think of the literature and cinema as a cross-cultural, artistic, and entertaining medium that helps us become global citizens.
