MARC Editor User Manual

Validation

Several validations have been built into the MARC Editor that will help us enter metadata correctly according to our rules.

See Dec. 2025 validation updates: Validation file changes to be done before cleaning · Issue #1983 · dag-hammarskjold-library/dlx-rest

The validations tell us whether the indicators and subfields as well as some of their values are compliant. Any issues are flagged in red upon entry (or in the case of older records upon opening the record).

If the field or subfield is not valid anymore, you must delete it. Only fields 650, 993 and 991 will continue to have indicators; the indicators in all other fields should be blank.

Validation

Corrections have to be made before a record can be saved. (This does not apply to records that were imported from Horizon - errors should be corrected if possible, but the record can be saved without corrections.)

Any MARC fields that are not valid will show up in red as well (for example if you type 511 instead of 611).

For several fields, we have defined the most commonly used subfields, and they will appear automatically when you add the field. In this example below, the subfields a, b, and c appear when you enter the 999 field.
