Exploring the Collections

This guide describes the various ways the DC History Center collections are organized, and the methods the public can use to access them.

Broadsides & Posters

Broadsides and posters are cataloged in the Archives catalog. While there are technical distinctions between the terms, the DC History Center uses broadside to generally describe large sheets with information or pictures that is intended to be posted, publicly distributed, or sold.

Broadsides are assigned an object ID following the in-house system of B plus 4-digit number.

Broadsides that have a distinct connection to a named manuscript collection may be assigned an B object ID, but the collection name will reflect the individual item's connection to the named collection rather than the General Broadside Collection. This allows items to remain connected to their provenance but be discoverable in the catalog.
