Module 1: Introduction to Heredity, Prenatal Development, and Birth

Objective: Students will be able to define terms such as gene, chromosome, gamete, etc. Students will be able to explain what determines the chromosomal sex of the child.

Introduction to Heredity, Prenatal Development, and Birth
In this lesson, we will look at some of the ways in which heredity helps to shape the way we are. We will look at what happens genetically during conception and take a brief look some genetic abnormalities.

Module 2: Prenatal Development

Objective: Students will be able to differentiate between the germinal, embryonic, and fetal periods of development.

Prenatal Development
Now we turn our attention to prenatal development which is divided into three periods: the germinal period, the embryonic period, and the fetal period. Here is an overview of some of the changes that take place during each period.

Module 3: Environmental Risks

Objectives: 1) Students will be able to identify specific environmental risks in prenatal development, and 2) Students will be able to predict the risks to prenatal development posed by exposure to teratogens.

Environmental Risks
Good prenatal care is essential. The developing child is most at risk for some of the most severe problems during the first three months of development. Unfortunately, this is a time at which most mothers are unaware that they are pregnant.

Module 4: Pregnancy

Objective: Students will be able to describe complications of pregnancy.

Pregnancy
There are a number of common side effects of pregnancy. Not everyone experiences all of these nor to the same degree.

Module 5: Childbirth

Objective: Students will be able to describe a normal delivery and complications of delivery.

Childbirth
Prepared childbirth refers to being not only physically in good condition to help provide a healthy environment for the baby to develop, but also helping a couple to prepare to accept their new roles as parents and to get information and training that will assist them for delivery and life with the baby as much as possible.

Module 6: Maternal Mortality

Objective: Students will be able to discover problems of newborns.

Maternal mortality: Why so many mothers die giving birth
Read about maternal mortality in others countries, including: Pakistan, Ethiopia, India, and Egypt.
